The nights are colder and darker and the nearest many of us will get to exercise is lifting the TV remote to change channels. We seek solace in stodgy food and before we know it, the pounds pile on. Fight back with the top 15 tips on winter healthy eating.
1. Have hot water with a slice of lemon
Before you eat anything in the morning, have a glass of this. It'll warm you up, get your bowels moving and give your body a gentle wake-up call. Don't glug too much cold water though, it can give you gas and cramps.
2. Eat breakfast
It's the most important meal of day. Studies show you'll lose more weight than if you skip it, and that your metabolism won't rev up after a night's sleep without it.
3. Don't starve yourself
Food gives you brain power. Eat five or six small meals a day to keep your metabolism going.
4. Eat every three or four hours
You don't have to have a full meal - snack on nuts, seeds or chopped raw vegetables, like carrot sticks.
5. Drink plenty
It's been said a million times before, but drinking water regularly throughout the day will not only keep you hydrated, but help push food through your system. Fruit also counts, as it has a high water content. Or try herbal tea for a warming winter drink.
6. Steer clear of fizzy drinks
The ones that don't have loads of sugar will have added sweeteners, which only make you crave more sugary treats.
7. Keep meals simple
Don't mix dense carbohydrates such as potatoes with meat. For example, try chicken with vegetables instead as it's easier to digest.
8. Eat lots of soup
It's very filling. Try homemade pea soup. Put one onion in a pan with olive oil and 600ml water. Add a stock cube and 165g frozen peas. Cook for two minutes with a handful of mint leaves, and blend. It takes me five minutes to make and it tastes delicious.
9. Brush your teeth after ever meal
The mint taste will prompt your body into thinking its food intake is over and curb your desire for sugar.
10. Eat a handful of almonds
They're packed with nutrients and help balance blood sugar levels. Studies have shown they help you lose weight and keep you feeling full. Perfect for a mid-afternoon snack.
11. Eat more in the first half of the day
You'll burn off calories without trying.
12. Eat raw foods with every meal
They contain enzymes that boost your metabolism and provide energy.
13. Walk before dinner
Walk on the spot, up the stairs or round the block. Getting yourself moving before eating will boost your metabolism.
14. Don't drink water with meals
It will dilute your digestive juices and you'll end up bloated. Drink before the meal or have sips during it.
15. Avoid pre-packed foods
These are full of added sugars, sweeteners and chemicals. There are some healthier ready meals around, but always check the label first.
